Jarrold’s Book Choice: The Story of the Norwich Boot and Shoe Trade
The Story of the Norwich Boot and Shoe Trade - Frances and Michael Holmes
RRP £9.95

Frances and Michael Holmes are the authors of the hugely successful books A Market For Our Times: A History Of The Norwich Provisions Market and Norwich Pubs And Breweries: Past And Present. Their latest project is this fascinating and comprehensive history of a trade which at one time employed 15% of the entire Norwich work force, making it the single biggest industry in the city. The book’s 262 pages are packed with first-hand accounts from those who worked in the trade, along with archive material, photographs and newspaper reports, all combining to paint a picture of this trade that was - and to a small extent still is - at the heart of Norwich’s commercial life.

Father Christmas Arrives At Jarrolds
In 1912, the good people of Norwich flocked to London Street to see Father Christmas arrive at Jarrolds. A longstanding tradition that the store still withholds today.

Norfolk churches contain more medieval chancel screens than any other English county. Packed with colour illustrations, this handsomely produced new book was a labour of love for the authors as they visited churches around the county to photograph some of its best-preserved and most beautiful screen paintings and to uncover some of the stories behind them. Paul Hurst is a professional photographer specialising in church and cathedral architecture; Jeremy Haselock is Precentor and Vice-Dean of Norwich Cathedral, as well as being a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

This photograph was taken from the rooftop of Jarrolds in July 2012. After several weeks of rain, this was the first day of glorious sunshine in a very long time. It clearly shows Norwich City Hall and its imposing clock tower, The Forum and St Peter Mancroft - three pieces of impressive architecture scanning several centuries.
Many thanks to local photographer Andi Sapey for taking this image and kindly donating it to the Jarrold Archives.
The ultimate home with a view! Jarrolds’ caretaker Arthur James Dunham, known as Joe, lived on the roof of the London Street store, where he created a beautiful garden with a fish pond and rose garden. Joe lived here with his wife Emily and daughters Winifred and Olive (pictured above).
To celebrate our Best of British season and the Diamond Jubilee here’s one of our archive photographs of our London Street store. It was flamboyantly decorated for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
